Stay [Live] 04:26
Stay This is the first line of a song about you It’s kinda simple but it’s the best that I can do I don’t want you ... This is the second part of a song about you Don’t have much to say but I suppose there should be two Hope you hear it On your radio Hope you hear it … Wish I knew Wish I knew the right words The right words to say I don’t want you ... I don’t want you to go ... Please stay This is another verse of a song about you Probably can’t get much worse but I’ll see what I can do Hope you’re listening To your radio Hope you’re listening … Wish I knew Wish I knew the right words The right words to say I don’t want you I don’t want you to go Please stay [Guitar] Wish I knew Wish I knew the right words The right words to say I don’t want you ... I don’t want you to go ... Oh no, no, no, no, no, no Wish I knew I wish I knew the right words, the right words, The right words to say I don’t want you ... I don’t want you to go ... Please stay This is the last line of a song about you © Heavy Happy Music 2001/2014

My Heart Effigy’s just one of Many places I’ve been burned I left my love there somewhere But it never was returned My heart was on my sleeve When she took me to the cleaners They even got the stain out With some shots of Mr Meanor’s* But that’s all right It’s okay ’cos I didn’t really need it anyway Well that’s all right It’s okay ’cos I never really used it anyway My heart My heart Once upon another time, Back when I had my shirt She rolled my heart in honey Then she stomped it in the dirt I asked her why she treated me So good and then so bad She smiled and said that It was just this hobby that she had But that’s all right It’s okay ’cos I didn’t really need it anyway Well that’s all right It’s okay ’cos I never really used it anyway My heart My heart My heart My heart My heart My heart Every now and sometimes When I think I’d like it back My memory repeats for me Her signature attack She’d throw down the gauntlet And when I bent to retrieve it Her knee would meet my mouth Encouraging my teeth to leave it But that’s all right, it’s okay ’cos I didn’t really need them anyway Well that’s all right, it’s okay ’cos I never really used them anyway My heart My heart … [Sax] Effigy’s just one of many places I’ve been burned ... Closer To You Not entirely sure where I am today Woke up under different sheets again Have to ask somebody When I go down for coffee Live with a little mystery ’till then It’s red and brown and grey out the window Could be any city anywhere And I’m staring at the telephone But I guess I’d best leave you alone ’Til I figure out what time it is back there ’Cos every moment I’m away takes me closer Sometimes that’s all that gets me through And every single step I take is another step It’s another step closer to you Had a mismatched conversation with the waitress Think she said the name of the hotel but I’m not sure When I tried to clarify She said, “On Mercy Street” and I Didn’t have it in me to pursue it any more But every moment I’m away takes me closer Sometimes that’s all that gets me through And every single step I take is another step It’s another step closer to you [Guitar] Well every moment I’m away takes me closer Sometimes that’s all that gets me through And every single step I take is another step It’s another step closer Well every moment I’m away takes me closer Every moment And every single step I take is another step It’s another step closer to you Closer Closer to you Closer © Heavy Happy Music 2002/2003

Shelley Shelley wasn’t there again today So once again he didn’t get to say “I’m sorry” but then just maybe He wouldn’t anyway Gathers all his hopes up off the floor Underestimated how much more She wanted and took for granted She’d never choose the door Would I lie to you? Would I ever tell you less than half the truth? Do you really think I could? Well, yes … yes I guess you would Sharing his own company again Doesn’t make for scintillating Conversation, a situation That possibly explains Why Robbie’s sitting outside in the rain Staring at the window of the plain White building where Shelley’s sleeping Or should be anyway Would I lie to you? Would I ever tell you less than half the truth? Do you really think I could? Well, yes … yes I guess you Would you ever accept part of the blame? Would you ever expect me to do the same? Shelley finds him snoring on the lawn Running late for work but now she’s torn: He’s stalking but maybe talking Could still avoid a war Leaves a scribbled note there on his chest Hurries off and hopes it’s for the best: “6:30 and this time I’ll be … I promise I’ll be there” Would I lie to you? Would I ever tell you less than half the truth? Do you really think I could? Well, yes … Would I lie to you? Would I ever tell you less than half the truth? Do you really think I could? Well, yes … Yes I guess you would History says you should So yes, I guess you ... Shelley wasn’t there again She wasn't there again Shelley wasn't there again today … © Heavy Happy Music 2004/2012

Steal You Back I don’t want to cut you with my broken heart I don’t mean to hurt you with my pain All I know is I’m aching here without you And I’m feeling things but I don’t have the words that can explain If only I had been there when you chose to leave If only we had spoken on that night Because, God knows, the house is empty here without you And I’m wishing there was something I could do to make things right If only … If only … If only these ‘if onlys’ had some power over history I’d shake the hands of time Arrange some momentary distraction and sneak around behind I’d break into the bank of time And steal you back Another day of helpless longing for your touch Another night spins out of my control I tell myself I have to start again without you Should dry my tears and pray that God has mercy on your soul A blur of words I retell the story yet again A blur of friends process in a well-meaning haze They want to help but I’m resenting the intrusion As if maybe it might not be true if they would all just go away I’d shake the hands of time Arrange some momentary distraction and sneak around behind I’d break into the bank of time And steal you back Someday I’ll cherish every moment that we shared But now I’m wavering somewhere between acceptance and despair I understand the theory of losing you very well But it doesn’t seem so simple When I explain it to myself I’d shake the hands of time Arrange some momentary distraction and sneak around behind I’d break into the bank of time And steal you back I’d take the hands of time Engage him in conversation while planning out my crime I’d break into the bank of time And steal you back [For Bill & Edith. And for Blake.] © Heavy Happy Music 2000/2015

Darling Please I don’t mind If the rain falls on my skin I don’t mind If the droplets gather underneath my chin I don’t mind I don’t mind But it’s late and I’m tired So darling, please, Won’t you let me in? I don’t mind If you get angry with me I don’t mind ’Cos I know that I should have remembered my keys I don’t mind I don’t mind But it’s cold and it’s dark And it’s late and I’m tired So darling, please, Won’t you let me in? Won’t you let me in? Hey, honey, are you awake? Hey, honey, I’m sorry it’s so late I don’t mind If I have to sleep on the floor I don’t mind Baby, please get up now and unlock the door I don’t mind I don’t mind But it’s wet and it’s cold And it’s dark and it’s late And I’m tired and I know you’re tired too But darling, please, Darling, please, Darling, please … Won’t you let me in? © Heavy Happy Music 2004

about

One Take. No Prisoners.

10 August 2015. It’s a crisp Monday night in the suburbs and a small crowd gathers at The Gaslight Tavern in Adelaide, South Australia (technically in Brompton for those keeping score). Fergus Maximus is setting up to record a couple of live sets in front of said crowd.
Except, of course, the audience has trickled in before they’ve managed to test all the mics ...

There’s cheerful banter, a sound check of sorts, then final tuning up before, finally, some tunes. They start with a set of jazz standards. This is Fergus Maximus in lounge mode (aka Jazz Paper Scissors).

The chatter fades and people are treated to some great music full of energy and fun but none of it is on this recording (this EP is taken from the second set). There will be JPS videos up on YouTube eventually. Honest.

After a quick break to make sure that the bar is appropriately stocked (it is), the band remove their JPS disguise. Kym Perry switches from electric to acoustic guitar. Jamie Harrison counters that move, swapping his acoustic (double) bass for an electric one. Perhaps Ferg changes his shirt. [Maybe. Details are hazy.) And then? Giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles ... No, wait. Wrong movie. Ferg draws people in with artful tales of love and loss, mistakes and surprises.

This EP was recorded using Fergus Maximus’ signature "One Take. No Prisoners." method. It’s real. It’s so live you can almost taste it. Plenty of glitches but the crowd knows they are part of something special. Skillful musicians unselfconsciously breathing life into songs replete with joy and pain and passion (Kym & Jamie thought they were just recording a demo).

So pull up a stool and wrap your ears around the sound of good friends making excellent music.

credits

released July 17, 2016

Ferg sang some stories, told some other stories, honked on the saxophone and performed random acts of percussion (then later designed and laid out the artwork)

Kym Perry played guitars (both acoustic and electric) and stompbox

Jamie Harrison played basses (both electric and acoustic)

Travis Grace was the live sound engineer and recorded from desk to disk

Matt Williams was the studio sound engineer who turned those raw tracks into this beautiful thing (at Fat Trax Studio in Adelaide)

Pete Maher did the mastering which made it even more beautiful (at Topfloor Productions in London)

Daniel Ralph from PressStopProductions set up cameras and edited video (check out the Fergus Maximus YouTube channel to see some of his handiwork)

Mark Anders hosted the gig at The Gassy and kept the lubricants flowing

Rhys Hewett from Graphic Alliance drew all the cartoons (including the famous ‘Splatman’ image that has become the official Fergus Maximus logo)

All songs by Fergus Maximus except Closer To You by Ferguson/Shillabeer/Harrison and Steal You Back by Ferguson/Shillabeer/Ferguson (for Blake)

Grateful thanks to Andrea for continuing to persevere beyond reasonable doubt, and to Lizzie, Rachel and Sam for in-jokes, hugs and upvotes

Ferg's unapologetic pop songs encompass all the important things: love, loss, mistakes, surprises and people’s astonishing capacity to miscommunicate. In these songs and stories you'll find some extraordinary snapshots from an ordinary life. ... more
